In rats with experimental colitis, the marked increase in bacterial translocation in postcolitis rats has been reversed by melatonin administration. This is due to melatonin’s anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects.

Using an elegant study design, including experimental colitis model, this research was performed by doctors from the Departments of General Surgery, Microbiology, Pathology and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Erciyes, Kayseri, Turkey.

There is currently a great deal of interest in the health-associated properties of probiotics, also known as ‘beneficial’ or ‘friendly’ bacteria, and prebiotics, the food needed for the growth of probiotic when inside our bodies. University of Leicester scientists have discovered a natural fruit-based extract that dramatically improves the growth and probiotic qualities of ‘friendly’ bacteria such as the lactic acid bacteria, which are found in most widely-advertised health supplement drinks.

Researchers in the U.K. have a new theory to explain the cause of Crohn’s disease, and they say medications like the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra may prove useful for treating the bowel disorder if they are right.

In Crohn’s disease, chronic inflammation causes ulcers within the digestive tract that can lead to severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, and rectal bleeding.

Elsevier in partnership with the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) is set to launch the Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis, a new international journal on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). This quarterly journal will be the official journal of the ECCO society and the first print issue will be available in September 2007.

The Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis is concerned with the dissemination of knowledge on clinical, basic science and innovative methods related to inflammatory bowel diseases. The journal will publish original articles, review papers, editorials, leading articles, view points, case reports, innovative methods and letters to the editor. Supplemental issues of the journal will be published under a separate title, Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis Supplements.

Recognizing that CT colonography will play a role in screening for colorectal cancer (CRC), and the critical need to increase overall CRC screening rates, the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute issued minimum standards for gastroenterologist performance of the test. To ensure competence, a minimum of 75 endoscopically confirmed cases should be interpreted by the physician.

This paper reports the fabrication of a handheld, simple to use sensor which detects contamination by deadly strains of E coli in drinking water. E. coli 0157, predominately 0157:H7, has been implicated as the causative organism of hemolytic uremic syndrome and hemorrhagic colitis. The sensor works based on irreversible color changes that occur subsequent to hydrolysis of a chromogenic substrate by a ß-galactosidase enzyme of E.coli.
